Ride Description

This route provides a tour of Colonial Williamsburg (CW) and Historic Jamestown Island. The route proceeds first to CW and passes by many of the historic buildings such as the Governor's Palace and the colonial Capital building. After leaving CW, a quick trip through the William & Mary Campus, then on to the Williamsburg Winery. After a stop at the winery, the route gets on the Colonial Parkway and proceeds around Jamestown Island. A restroom stop at the Glass Blowing exhibit can be taken prior to the Island loop. After the Island loop, this route proceeds on the Virginia Capital Trail and returns to the Powhatan Resorts, but if more miles are desired, they can easily be added by going west on the Virginia Capital Trail, before doubling back towards Spoke & Art.

Most of the ride is on the Virginia Capital Trail, except for about 14 miles on rural Charles City County Roads and Monticello which has a bike lane. A rest stop is available at the Breezin' convenience store at mile 18. Optional stops at Chickahominy Riverfront Park and Spoke & Art.

Ride Description

This route starts from the Powhatan Resorts and takes the ferry over to Surry County. After passing through the small town of Surry, pleasant country roads take you to Chippokes State Park, which lies along the James River. Visit the Farm Museum at the park, or just enjoy a break before making your way back to the ferry to return. There is no fee to ride the ferry and bicycles are permitted to ride onto the ferry - the attendants will instruct you where to position your bicycles. Restrooms are available on the ferry, in Surry and at Chippokes State Park. NOTE: Ride With GPS distance is shown as 35 miles but excluding the ferry ride, this is a 30 mile route.

Ride Description

Let's get in one more ride before returning to Harrisburg.  This short tour of Jamestown Island begins and ends at Powhatan Resorts. The island offers two loops: a shorter one of 3 miles and a longer 5 mile version. Technically a pass to ride the Island is required but this is not enforced. If you have a Senior Lifetime National Park pass that is accepted.

Ride Description

When you exclude the distance on the ferry, this is approximately a 60 mile route to Smithfield and back. There are several great lunch spots available in Smithfield. The route is mostly on very quiet country roads. The return trip goes by Chippokes Plantation State Park which makes a nice stop but keep in mind the extra time consumed by taking the ferry.  I am hoping we can catch the 9 AM ferry.  The ferry is a 20 minute ride over the James.  Reminder to pause your bike computer while on the ferry if you care about exact distance and average.  Average pace will be 13-15 mph.  The route is fairly flat with some hills on the return leg but we will re-group as needed.
